What are the health benefits of drinking water?

Water makes up for the fluid components of various parts of the body (inter cellular spaces, intra cellular spaces and intravascular spaces)

  • Nurtures cells and tissues and keep them moist and active
  • Prevents from dehydration and fatigue
  • Prevents headache, lack of concentration and joint pains
  • Reduces the risk of gastrointestinal problems, bowel movement
  • Prevents colorectal bladder and breast cancers
  • Removes waste material from the body
  • Prevents the formation of kidney stones and helps in preventing kidney problems and diseases
  • Prevents dehydration from the loss of water from diarrhea

How much water should I drink every day?

Water is removed from the body everyday by different means. Majority of the water is removed from urine. Approximately 1.5 liters per day is removed from the urine. Water is also removed from the sweat, breath and from the bowel.

Requirement of water per day

Men: 3 liters a day

Women: 2.2 liters per day

Children: 1.5 to 2 liters a day

What is dehydration?

Daily we excrete water from urine, sweat, breath and from bowel. The excreted amount increases with the physical activity like running, jogging and swimming. When the water supply to the body is less than the water demand of the body, dehydration occurs. When the body is under dehydration, brain starts providing thirst signals and the antidiuretic hormone is released to prevent the loss of water from the urine.

What are the signs and symptoms of dehydration?

Feeling of thirst and increase in water intake is an initial sign for dehydration

Symptoms:

  • Dry mouth, eyes and nose
  • Feeling headache, dizziness and fatigue
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Increased heart rate and fainting

What happens if the dehydration is not treated?

Untreated dehydration can have adverse effects on the body. Body cells lose water and shrink. Cell damage can occur. The extended dehydration can lead to coma and death.

How to avoid dehydration?

  • Drink plenty of water every day
  • Adopt carrying water bottle at all times
  • Drink often than drinking at once
  • Drink water before, in between and after physical activity and exercise
  • Keep a reminder to drink water if you think you may forget drinking often in a day

Precautions to take during travel to other countries

The most common means of getting health problems like diarrhea during travel comes from drinking contaminated water. Always drink water from the distilled and purified mineral water. Pure water is sold in the bottles in almost all parts of the world. Keep extra bottles if you think you may run out of water bottles. Take caution when buying a water bottle. Do not forget to buy from reputed shops. Diarrhea, cholera, salmonella, amobeasis and hepatitis A are some of the commonly reported health problems from drinking contaminated water during travel outside the country.
