When we take alcohol, it is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and enters liver through blood stream from hepatic portal vein. Within the liver, alcohol (ethanol) is oxidized to acetaldehyde by enzyme called alcohol dehydrogenase. Acetaldehyde is further oxidized to acetic acid. Acetic acid is converted to carbon dioxide and water in TCA cycle. Alcohol, which is not converted, in small amounts, is excreted from breath.
